The other side of special

A heartfelt resource offering understanding and solidarity to parents of children with disabilities.
Through compassion and shared experiences, this book provides hope, faith, and community on the
journey of disability parenting.

About My Book

My co-authors and co-hosts, Amy J. Brown and Carrie M. Holt, and I have over thirty-five years of parenting experience raising children with physical, medical, mental, and emotional disabilities. Mothers of children with disabilities experience fear, guilt, grief, despair, and many more emotions that leave them feeling isolated and alone. In our book, “The Other Side of Special,” we do not offer quick fixes or simple solutions to this complex journey we call disability parenting. Instead, we will provide understanding, compassion, and solidarity, knowing God is present even amid difficult and messy emotions.

Together, there is joy, hope, and community.

Following the release of this book, I’ve come to understand that the term ‘special needs’ is no longer universally accepted by individuals with disabilities. Preferences vary among individuals and their caregivers regarding the terminology they prefer. In light of my son T.J.’s explicit request to be referred to as disabled rather than as having special needs, I will refrain from using the term ‘special needs’ in the future. Our aim with this book is to support you effectively. We want to underscore our respect for you and your loved ones, irrespective of the language you choose to use.
